Mad Max: Fury Road

Going into this from previews alone Mad Max looked as though it would be a action packed, thrill ride of a movie. I have to say that is an understatement. I usually like my movies with heavy, well written, smart dialogue. This movie had none, I’m willing to bet the amount of actually words and lines spoken was under 20 pages total. I DON’T CARE!!!!!! This movie was ridiculously awesome!

The movie stars Tom Hardy, who even though he wears a mask for most of the movie (what the heck is it with directors putting masks on this guy? BANE) is one of the best actors in Hollywood currently. So I’ll admit I wasn’t crazy about another performance hidden behind a mask, but Hardy was still was a boss in this movie.

This cast alone could be given another movie that is heavy in drama and dialogue and it’d still be terrific. Charlize Theron and Nicholas Holt (Beast in X-Men) along with Hardy make this arguably the best action movie team ever assembled.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is stunningly shot in the classic George Miller style of camera work, cinematography and suspense filled cuts. In an era where all post-apocalyptic movies consist primarily of zombies, Fury Road is based on savage half-humans trying to hunt, kill and possibly eat what beautiful humans traveling around trying to survive.

It was nice to see an action movie that wasn’t dominated by over-the-top effects and tons and tons of quick cuts to raise tension. It’s exhilarating to see the use of actual sets in a large scale along with aggressive, believable battle sequences filmed with surreal  wide angles and well placed, descriptive close-ups

Having seen all the Mad Max movies I really have no idea where this one fits in the timeline. But with that being said I don’t really care. Hardy plays the same lead character played by Mel Gibson in the orginals. Max Rockatansky. Who is just traveling through the ruined world with only one priority. To survive. If you haven’t seen any of the other movies it isn’t even necessary. This movie stands alone by itself.

Mad Max women

The amount of beautiful women running together in a group, post apocalypse is not only ridiculous but it’s also equally GREAT! About those women. Rosie Huntington-Whitley (Mrs. Jason Statham)  is the Splendid Angharad, Zoe Kravitz (Daughter of Lenny) is Toast the Knowing, Abbey Lee is the Dag, Riley Keough is Capable and Courtney Eaton is Cheedo the Fragile. So there! Even though they are all equally beautiful the each have a different purpose as well as talent that makes them useful and unique.

Not only does this movie have more suspense and adrenaline that all the Fast and Furious movies combined it is just stunning to watch and look at. From the muscle cars, tanks, drag racers and land-speed rocket ships. The War Boys, enemy soldiers, motorcycles flying through the air, warriors swinging impossibly back and forth on long poles, trying to kill everything that moves. All that action is combined with death music being played live on enormous drums and electric guitars on the front of a truck for kicks!

This should now be the blueprint for the perfect action movie. It’s equal parts CRAZY, FANTASTIC, SUSPENSEFUL, INTENSE, BEAUTIFUL and RIDICULOUS! And even with all that it still have great acting, some actual depth to the character development even though lacking in dialogue. Like is said the perfect action movie and my favorite movie of the year so far.
