I’m highly anticipating seeing this one when it comes out. This is the story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the priest sex abuse scandals that rocked the Catholic Church at the beginning of this century and continue to do so today. The movie reminds me a little of the excellent book, The Church That Forgot Christ by Jimmy Breslin. Furthermore, it seems an appropriate subject to tackle given the recent visit to the United States of Pope Francis and his earnest efforts at reconciliation of this matter.
More than the interesting, gut-wrenching and very relevant subject matter, I believe that Tom McCarthy may prove a great director with this one. But, most importantly, I’ m looking forward to what I think will be some excellent acting. Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Billy Crudup and Rachel McAdams are all superb actors, and I’m awaiting them telling this story with grace and realism.
Lastly, the fact that it was selected to play at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, (One of my great regrets is that I was unable to see it at TIFF this year.) and that there is already talk of Oscar buzz about it is encouraging. It will certainly be a hard picture to see, but I believe it will be worth it.
