9. Both Death Stars were capable of lightspeed

While were on the subject of the Death Stars this next fact is really common sense if you think about it, though the movies never made much of an issue of it.

Building these massive and ungodly expensive battlestations would be utterly pointless if they weren’t able to travel around the galaxy doing planetary hit and runs. So yes, the Death Stars were equipped with hyperdrives allowing them to jump to light speed. According to the wookieepedia page again, the first Death Star actually had 123 hyperdrives working together to move the massive artificial moon from system to system.

Just imagine how absurd it must have looked to have one of these massive planet killing battlestations drop out of lightspeed right in front of you.

What? You thought they were just stuck in orbit around the planets it encircled? The Death Stars wouldn’t be very effective fear inducing weapons for the Empire if they traveled at Haley’s Comet type speeds. So of course they had to have hyperdrives. That would right up there with devoting all those resources into building them but forgetting to shield the exhaust ports and we all know how important……….oh.

Opps.

Did you know? In 1980 Voyager 1’s flyby of Saturn and it’s moon’s revealed detailed pictures of Saturn’s smallest moon, Mimas. The pictures Voyager sent back showed a small grey moon with a enormous impact crater on it’s face that closely resembles the super laser weapon on on the Death Star.

Here is another fun fact: the exhaust port WAS shielded. xD They had ray shields, which stopped laser cannon fire. That’s why they had to use proton torpedoes, which were much harder to use.

    • I didn’t know that! That’s a good one and a valid #11 fact! 😉 Thanks!
